hi guys, i’m karen kavett and today we aretalking dorm room decor. so if you’re moving into a dorm room thisyear, or you just want to upgrade your bedroom or your apartment today i have three ideasfor you for how you can take your recycling, like the stuff you were going to throw out,and turn it into really cute decorations. but before we get into it, make sure thatyou stay tuned until the end of the video because it’s giveaway time. i have a huge giveaway for you and you’renot gonna want to miss this. it’s open to canadians too, so canadians, you guys all better stay until the end of the video, ok?

so make sure that you like this video if youlike it and subscribe if you like what you see, and let’s get into the diys. don’t throw away your starbucks cups, becausewe’re going to use them to make this adorable desk organizer. you can use as many as you like, but i’musing one big, one medium, and one small, or whatever it is they call them at starbucks. cover the outside with painters tape, becausewe’re going to be painting the inside. you can also loop another piece of tape onthe bottom to help keep the cups upright while we spray paint them.

so, take them outside and give each one acoating on the inside with spray paint. once they’re dry, remove the tape, and we’vegot fun colorful starbucks cups. decide how you want to arrange them, and thenuse hot glue to glue them together. however, because of the shape of the cups, they’re only glued at one point, and so it isn’t very sturdy. so, trace the bottoms of the cups onto posterboardor chipboard and cut that out. then use hot glue to glue it onto the bottomof the cups and this will help hold the whole thing together. and, that’s it!

now we’ve made this adorable starbucks deskorganizer that has tons of room for all of your school supplies. if you find that some of the spray paint isscratching off, when you take your school supplies in and out, you can always put anothercup into each of these cups and that will help kind of protect the spray paint. just don’t blame me if you find yourselfconstantly craving a pumpkin spice latte while you’re supposed to be doing your homework. next we’re going to make this trendy gridphoto display. i’ve seen these everywhere and they lookamazing, but they can be expensive, so you

can make your own out of a cardboard box. cut off the longest, cleanest section of thebox. and then use a ruler to mark every quarterinch at the top and the bottom, and this will help you make sure that all of your cardboardpieces are the same size. then use a sharp craft knife to cut off stripsof cardboard. the number of strips that you cut will justdepend on how big your box is and how tightly you want your grid to be spaced. once you have all of the cardboard cut out,put down a large cutting mat, and this will just help keep everything aligned.

begin by lining up the edges of the grid intoa square, and then warm up your hot glue gun and carefully glue them together. now do some math to figure out how to spacethe inside pieces. mine ended up being about 30 centimeters long, and i’m using centimeters here just because it’s just easier to divide up than the samemeasurement in inches. so, i placed my lines every 5 centimeters, and now it’s just a matter of using your glue gun again to glue them down. once all of that glue is dry, flip and turnit over, and do the same thing with the other lines.

you’ll just need to make sure to put a dotof glue at every point of contact so it’s as strong as possible. once all of the glue is dry, put another layerof hot glue on the back, and again, this will just make it a bit stronger. now we’re almost done, it’s just timeto paint it. i decided to spray paint mine a dark graybut you could definitely use acrylic paint and any color you like. to hang it up, i glued magnets to the cornersof mine, which would be perfect if you wanted to hang it up in your locker, or you coulduse thumbtacks to hang it on the wall.

then just put your photos in place and you’redone. obviously since this is made of cardboard, don’t hang anything too heavy on it, but lightweight decorations like photos or a littlepom pom garland are perfect. and since i only had a small box, i made apretty small grid, but you can definitely make this as big as you want using a largerbox, and turn it into a real statement piece in your dorm room. and finally, i don’t know about you guys, but i end up with a lot of empty duct tape rolls. so instead of throwing them out, you can usethem to make a pencil holder for your desk

or your locker. begin by carefully cutting it half, and you’llwant to use pretty sturdy scissors for this step. then stack the two halves on top of each otherand hot glue them together. you can add more hot glue to the inside tomake sure they’re really stuck together. when that’s dry, trace the half-circle ontoa piece of cardboard, i just cut this off of my box from the last project. also tip the pencil holder over to trace theback, and you should end up with a half circle and a rectangle.

go ahead and cut those out. so these are the three pieces we’ll be workingwith. but i found it’s easier to decorate themif you do it before gluing them together. so i covered mine with white masking tapeand then with stripes of colorful washi tape. once it’s completely covered in tape, coverthe inside with packing tape, to make sure the washi tape isn’t going to peel up. then do the same thing with the back piece- cover it in white tape and then washi tape. now it’s time to glue it together. use plenty of hot glue to glue the bottomin place, and you can add more hot glue to

the inside to make sure it’s really stuckon there. then trim the back piece until it fits niceand snug in place. and then use more hot glue to glue it in placeand you can be really liberal with the amount of hot glue that you use since it’ll behard to add more to the inside at this point. and, that’s it. if you just want to stand it up on your desk, then you’re done. but if you want to hang it in your locker, glue some magnets onto the back, and i’d actually recommend e6000 instead of hot gluefor this step, especially if you’re going to be moving it around a lot.

you can also make a smaller version by onlyusing one half of the duct tape roll, and you can get creative by adding a little cutoutlike i did here. i think these are so cute, and they’re theperfect way to recycle all of your old rolls of duct tape and be able to have all of yourschool supplies on hand. and of course if you’re not like me andyou don’t have tons of washi tape all over the place, you can paint these or decoratethem however you like. so i hope you guys liked those ideas. but now, i know that this is what you haveall been waiting for, it is giveaway day! this company called umbra reached out to me,just offering me a bunch of free stuff to
